waiting, waiting in hopeless (New Year) nights

--

The New Year is always disappointing by January 3. There’s a Portuguese song by Rui Veloso, called Não Há Estrelas no Céu (There are no stars in heaven). It’s quite good and there’s a line there, from the amazing Portuguese writer Carlos Tê, that goes:

“For me today is January, it’s freezing cold
It seems like the whole world got together to set me up”

Makes perfect sense to me since a young age — the song is from 1990 when I was 9 years old.

January is after Christmas, usually is colder, with more clouds than usual and the promises from Xmas and New Years Eve start to fade away on that second day of the year.
